IMMEDIATE
RELEASE
August 20, 1996
What a
fine mess the Governments transport policy is in.
The
announcement not to proceed with the controversial A27 superhighway leaves
Lancing and Worthing fuming and overwhelmed by traffic generated by the massive
new roads on either side.
Lucie
Colkett of Worthing GREEN PARTY said:
"This
Governments willful failure to get to grips with the countries transport
problems is a disgrace. With a
general election looming and Peter Bottomley the ex
Tory transport secretary hoping to be the next MP for Worthing West etc.
voters have been sent a wonderful opportunity to send a clear message to
Westminster.
Road
traffic must be reduced if we are to combat the rise in Asthma and general ill
health caused by the frightening level of exhaust
pollution. Road building only
creates more space for the vehicles to fill witness the M25.
The
Green Party's Road Traffic Reduction Bill. soon to be put before parliament, is
a balanced well thought out plan to stabilise and then reduce traffic growth by
making other means of travel user friendly.
I
urge everyone who cares about our environment and quality of life to write to
their MP. prospective parliamentary candidate, County, Parish or town Council
and ask them to support and sign the Road
Traffic Reduction Bill".
