Housing Plans Scuppered
Fears of gridlock on roads along the South coast is reported as the main reason for the Highways agency throwing doubt on the massive new housing development planned for West Durrington near Worthing.
A delighted John Tyler of the West Sussex Green Party said: "With the admission that the A27 through Worthing is at capacity and the roundabouts at Offington and Grove Lodge are unlikely to cope with any more traffic, the Agency have confirmed what we've all known for a long time, traffic growth is out of control. With this announcement the Highways agency have effectively called a halt to the Governments mad-cap house building plans destined for south Sussex. Hopefully many area's of precious countryside are now safe from greedy developers.
However while the coast may not get the developments, it will continue to suffer from the effects of traffic pollution. The West Sussex Green Party can see no other alternative now, than to implement wide area congestion charging to combat traffic growth. If only West Sussex County Council had implemented measures contained in the Green Party sponsored 'Road Traffic Reduction Act' we wouldn't be in this mess now.
